The award was presented to Ban for his role as the airfield operations company commander during Operation Invincible Spirit in Pohang, South Korea. Ban led a detachment of approximately 100 Marines to Pohang with less than 96 hours notice. After receiving word, Ban had all personnel and equipment identified, prepared and ready to support the exercise in less than 48 hours.
